Tomorrow is my birthday. I'm in a pretty good place. It has helped tremendously that we've had an unseasonably warm winter. Just two days ago it was 51 degrees here in Wisconsin. But all things change...
Tonight we are having our first snow of the winter. And of course, it's right at my birthday. But that's okay. I live and love in Wisconsin. I do need the winter to hibernate and fuel myself. The changing of the seasons is in my blood.
Tomorrow we are having a big party at the house to send our daughter, Ryann, off to Tanzania and Kenya for two months. She leaves on Saturday. I'm so excited for her. What a great birthday present to see my child fulfill a dream.
Bon Voyage my sweet girl and a happy 'nother lap around the sun for me! Yay!
And here's a song that brings me warmth on a cold January night and makes me so happy - Michael Franti -

Time
Life is fragile yet so resilient.
You only have now - make what you can.
Love.
With all your heart.
Be.
That is the person you are.

Beautiful songs
Started following a thread from Facebook and decided these are my favorite songs today. Have a listen....
Because of You....written by Arthur Hammerstein. Why haven't I really heard K.D. Lang sing before? What a beautiful voice and especially with Tony Bennett.
What a wonderful life....written by Bob Thiele and George Weiss.
I fall to pieces...written by Hank Cochran

Need a job for your heart?
Have a little time?
Need some unconditional love?
Maybe, just looking to give back a little in this life?
Karma?
Then now might be the time to be a Foster Mama (or Papa) to a dog one shot away from nothing.
(Mira, my 6th foster dog and one I should have kept....:)
I got involved in dog rescue and fostering in 2008. I did it for a couple of reasons.
One, to be honest, I was looking for someone to love, my kids had grown and I'm a nurturer at heart (even though I had never thought of myself as such) but when the house was empty of demands, schedules, homework, practices, etc. after 20 years, I found I had some extra attention to give and no one to give it to.
(Here's Trixie, now known as Hailey, who my parents fostered through the summer of 2011)
Two, I have been so fortunate to have had such amazing dogs in my life: (Puffy, Willy, Tasha, Cita and my sweet boy Teiko) How could I not do something?
(My first dog, Puffy and me taking a "nap")
Three, I read a heart-felt plea about truly honoring your dog who had passed, by giving another dog a chance.
So 10 foster dogs later. I've learned a few things...
- Dogs want to please you. Just not always the way you're expecting....
- Your energy - both good and bad says more to a dog than your voice.
- All new dogs will "mark" your home at least once....
- Dog (and kids) need structure, rules, discipline and time to be free
- Joy comes in quick moments and you had better pay attention: Like a wagging tail, a play bow, a successful "Come" or "Sit" and sometimes, if you are lucky, a full jump of joy.
- Your trust in the dog is a powerful tool for training.
- Your heart always has room for just one more dog and that's why you can let go.
So here's Dakota, my parents' and my latest foster. Dakota is truly a rescue in that she came from a neglect situation where she was forcibly surrendered by a dog-hoarding family that also kept wolves, yes...wolves. For the first three years of her life, she was kept in an outside pen behind the barn (and yes, Wisconsin winters suck). When coming to shelter, with no socialization to the real world, she was timid, cowered and would back-up from everything. The only comfort she could give herself was licking her skinny hip.
Thankfully, the family gave her to the local humane shelter, which spent the time getting to know her sweetness. After a few calls and emails, Dakota found her way to GSRAW. With a couple of months of love, attention, care and discipline she has just blossomed into an amazing young dog. Yes, she has a lot to learn yet, but dang, she's come so far.
Today Dakota and I worked on some house-dog basics. She conquered the stairs. She hammered the word - "Come" (always have a great $1000 treat - like ham). She worked on the sit, stay and wait commands. She wore out my arm with a Wubba and her absolute joy to play. She sniffed every tree on our one hour walk. And she didn't knock over the miniature poodle, Cita.
The best moment: She gives hugs. Really! She'll jump up gently, put her front paws around your middle, tuck her nose in your side and just be.
Here is a great dog who just loves to be in safety and kindness and knows how good she has it.
And the sad....she could have easily had been euthanized like so many others - because of her initial fear of new things.
And imagine that. What a loss of joy.
PLEASE, please consider fostering. It makes your heart feel so good and it really does make a difference!

The end of an era
It had to come, the final voyage of the best slippers ever. As you can see, Todd has finally given up the ghost. Purchased in Berlin, these slippers traveled the world and comforted Todd's feet every night for the past 10 years.
They should have met their maker a few years ago, but we've never found another pair to fit Todd's very specific requirements of comfort, warmth and fit.
Guess we'll have to go back to Berlin to find another pair. The department store, KaDeWe, was pretty amazing. Here's a link in English to their website

Was Franti in Madison tonight?
Word was that Michael Franti was coming to Madison tonight to support the April 4 rallies at the Capitol. Not sure if that happened. I had to go to my dance class. But here's a great song from Michael.

Yep, was downtown for my birthday again this year. This time, just across the street at a new restaurant called Nostrano. Had a nice dinner with the girls and Todd.
Am managing winter much better this year, as it has been warmer than the past couple of years and sunnier! My outside temp for walking the dogs is 15 degrees. Most days qualify - so that is a good thing. Walking is good for the dogs and good for the soul!

5 reasons I would attend a wedding
Weddings invitations are seemingly coming from every direction lately. I'm too old for this. Here are my conditions for attending your "special day".
- This is your first hetero/gay/bi/trans marriage (all right, for at least ONE of the happy couple).
- I am related by blood as family dynamics (Mom) requires attendance.
- We have known each other for over 10 years.
- You are marrying in a locale I’ve never been AND would love to see.
- A BabyMama (not the bride) is invited to the glorious day for sheer entertainment.
Meet three of these conditions and I will most likely attend. Ideally, it is only for the dinner/dance portion of the day as the religious portion gives me hives.

April Showers bring May weeds.....
Once again, I find myself so busy at work, and at home that I'm not spending time updating like I should. Have posted several things over the past month on my facebook account. Naughty girl. I need to post that to my blog and then link...
Life is busy but good!
That being said, Spring is in beautiful bloom here in Madcity. When I'm not taking photos with my iphone, I'm finding plenty to keep me busy!
I've already put down the first load of mulch, am planning several house improvement projects, preparing for Raine's HS grad party, developing three websites for clients using WordPress (not much liking blogger anymore....) and planning this summer's garden layout.

Oh boy, that seasonal affective disorder has set in. The dark days of northern clime winters has really taken their toll on me this year. I am in a funk. I have no motivation, can't focus on or make anything new. Case in point. I signed up for a beginner's knitting class last month, being a new year's resolution to learn something new. I seriously don't get what's so great about it. It goes sooooooooooooooo slow and it takes forever to finish a stupid row - OMG. And now I can't quit because that is what losers do. Thankfully the class ends next week.
All right, it's time to flip this nasty state of being on its ass. This is not me! I normally have a somewhat "sunny" disposition. I see the glass as half-full. I find the beauty and fun in simple things.
I'm heading to Mexico. Anyone want to come with?

Zero Venison this year
You have to give Todd serious kudos! He spent 12 hours this past weekend in a deer stand trying to get me some venison. The deer didn't cooperate, but say what you will, to me, that is L.O.V.E.!
What a man! - Oh, and check out the article in the Wisconsin State Journal about Todd and our business, 5Nines Data. Great Story!

Never let your mother cut your hair
My dear mother gave me some photos today. This is historic proof that she once and only once attempted to cut and style my hair at age three. I even remember being so excited to go the Sears portrait studio to have my photo taken with such fancy clothes and stylized good looks.
What the hell was she thinking? Check out the bangs...

Happy Veterans Day
If this doesn't bring a tear or two watching dear friends reunited after a long separation, I don't know what will. Here'a link to more dogs and their soldiers reunited.
A wish of goodness to all the veterans where ever you may be.

La Dia del Muertos
The purpose of this day is to remember. To be taken back in time and really understand what our family and friends meant to and taught us, what can we pass on and how we loved each one.
What a great celebration!

While up at Beatons a few weeks ago, I asked Bonnie if she had any liqueur to top off my evening coffee. Bonnie, being the ever intrepid Yooper, had a box of liquor from a neighbor who had stopped drinking and gave away the liquor cabinet. Not to let anything go to waste, She figured she'd find some use for it so stored it away.Imagine our surprise to find among the box, a bottle of Courvoisier and Hiram Walker whiskey. Both had numbers and year stamps from 1946.
There was 60 year old whiskey just waiting for us! And let me tell you, the whiskey was beautifully smooth, just like a cognac. What a find! And the best damn Irish Coffee, I've ever had.

Catching up.....
This is probably the longest I've gone without posting to my blog, ever.
Where to start? Nothing earth shattering to report. Just too busy dealing in the real world and a broken camera doesn't help.
I've had my first foster failure. As you might know, I've been fostering German Shepherds since last December. I've met some incredible dogs and have learned so much in both dog and human behavior. I am humbled.
My first failure was Cara, my seventh foster dog since December. She came from a really hard background. No family, living in an outdoor kennel for the past few years at a pet "sanctuary" which was busted by officials. In the beginning of August she was transported to me from Kentucky.
And oh boy, did I have my work cut out for me. She needed to relearn that people are good. She needed to learn how to use stairs. She needed to learn she had a name. She needed to learn the word "come". She needed to learn how not jump up on the dining room table at dinnertime.....She needed learn my carpet wasn't her potty space.
All that I could deal with.
It was the attack on my sweet boy, Teiko, to the point of serious wounds to his legs and face, when I realized, "Holy crap, I'm totally out of my league!"
To make a long story short, I had to keep her for a few more weeks as there was no other place to send her. That meant we always had to keep her separated from Teiko in different rooms, separate walks, separate potty time, etc. ALWAYS.
Finally, she was moved to a great home with a professional trainer who could help this girl. And within a few weeks, she had found her forever home.
The moral of this story:
Even with all of Cara's issues, she really touched me. She needed a friend. And that I could do.
I was able to show her that humans can be kind and good. And she, bless her, believed. I will always remember how she would come up to me, stick her snout between my arm and side and just stand absolutely still and calm, breathing me while I lovingly stroked her.
I'd tell her what a great dog she was. And then she'd look me in the eye and give me a tentative but sweet kiss on the cheek. I could see the potential in this dog.
I hear you are not suppose to "humanize" your experience with animals. But damn, I think it's the animals who teach us how to be human.

Happy Blogoversary to me
Yay, today marks the the start of my third year of blogging the Life of Rylee. When I first started - I tried to do my own blog, but soon gave up and started using Blogger tools. The original still exists here - Life of Rylee. One of my first blog stories was a photo essay of using the macro lense on my new (at the time) Pentax Optio point and shoot camera.A lot has happen over the past two years as witnessed on my blog. I hope the next years are just as good!

Web phishers and forgers eat scum!
Some evil little bastard or group of'em went out on a phishing expedition today to try to capture Paypal log-in information from unsuspecting folks. I thought I'd show how this little scam works.
Being in the internet business, I see these types quite regularly caught in our spam/virus filtering servers, this one somehow made it into my mail box. As you can imagine, I know not to provide any type of login or personal info from unsolicited emails. And I also know NOT to use MS Explorer as my primary web browser. You'll see why later....
The email address was masked to look like it came from paypal@paypal.com - this is such a simple trick to set up that it insults one's intelligence. Above is a screen shot of the email with the hyperlink to the supposed paypal site where I am to "log-in" to update and or correct my account.
I know this is suspect immediately because the domain name isn't paypal.com. If you look carefully, it is database-confirmation.com They evil bastards just created a subdomain account using paypal.database-confirmation.com - as most people will just see paypal in the web address and click away.
So knowing this is a phishing expedition, I copied the link and opened up my Mozilla Browser which I consider a far superior browser for surfing the internet. Here's the screen message that came up - Mozilla is telling me that I shouldn't even thinking about connecting to that website - it's already been reported as a web forgery! I back out and am relieved that I did not unknowingly give my paypal log in details.
However, being the inquisitive little shit that I am, I can't leave it at that. So I open an MS Explorer window and paste the same URL address. Lo and behold, I'm taken to what sure looks like Paypal's website - even all the hyperlinks in the page go to internal paypal.com links. All except the golden log-in box which is patiently waiting for my paypal email and password log-in info.
So while probably not all that smart but I couldn't help myself, I entered in my Paypal email address - teeheehee....yousuck@youareevil.com and my favorite paypal password: yousuck!
A new window appears that tells me there was an error with my log-in. So I did what everyone does, I re-type my info again - exactly the way I did it the first time - and have now confirmed to the evil bastards that yes, in fact, these are my PayPal credentials. By the time I "figure out" that the error message is going to reappear every time I enter in the same credentials, the evil bastards have cleaned out my Paypal account and are halfway to China!
Funny, I should say that, I also did a whois look up on the domain name: database-confirmation.com and see that is registered and owned by one Pan Wei wei in Beijing, China.
So a lesson to the wise - download Mozilla's browser for free and make it your primary browser
http://www.mozilla.com
And never ever provide critical account information just because someone sends you an urgent email telling you to do so.

Having some fun with my new camera and this works well to distract me from Paris' departure.

Pictured above is a mask that Todd brought in Mexico last fall. The Sun/Moon theme is found thoughtout central Mexico with its Aztec history. This motif is found on walls, art, jewelry, buildings, and sculptures in most towns around Mexico City.

In the photo above I literally had the camera lense almost touching the nose of the moon's face. The wide angle lense is able to capture great detail and color at a very close range.

And I had to throw this photo in the mix. I love how the sunlight is reflected in the glass beads. Again, I had the lense almost touching the beads.
